Paris, France, August 9: Indian men’s hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh celebrated his team’s bronze medal win at the Paris Olympics in style. This was his final international tournament for India. Sreejesh posted a picture on Instagram of himself sleeping next to his medal with a smile, captioned, ‘Whataaaaaa morning.’

The Indian team, led by Captain Harmanpreet Singh, secured a historic bronze medal by defeating Spain 2-1. This marked their second consecutive Olympic medal, an achievement last accomplished 52 years ago. The match was held at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium and was significant as it was also Sreejesh’s farewell game.

Harmanpreet Singh scored two crucial goals in the 30th and 33rd minutes, leading the team to victory. Sreejesh made some memorable saves, solidifying India’s position as a dominant force in international hockey. Sreejesh, a veteran of over 300 international caps, has been part of many memorable wins for India, including a gold medal in the 2014 Asian Games and a bronze medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Hockey India announced a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh for each player of the men’s hockey team and Rs 7.5 lakh for each member of the support staff in recognition of their bronze medal triumph. Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey praised the team’s performance, stating, ‘This victory is a testament to the hard work, determination, and resilience of our players and support staff. Winning back-to-back Olympic medals is an extraordinary achievement that reflects the resurgence of Indian hockey on the world stage.’

Tirkey also congratulated PR Sreejesh for his stellar career and invaluable contributions to Indian hockey, saying, ‘His legacy will inspire future generations.’
