JP Nadda posted on social media, ‘The decision to rename Port Blair as Sri Vijaya Puram embodies PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of erasing colonial legacies and reclaiming our historical identity.’ He emphasized that the new name honors the bravery and sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters.
Home Minister Amit Shah announced the renaming, stating that the previous name had a colonial legacy, while the new name symbolizes the victory achieved in the freedom struggle. He highlighted the unique role of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India’s history, including its significance during the Chola Empire and the freedom struggle.
Local leaders and tourism officials have welcomed the decision. Mohan Vinod, President of the Andaman Association of Tour Operators, expressed gratitude, calling the renaming a game-changer for tourism and a step towards preserving the islands’ rich history and cultural heritage. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Andaman and Nicobar Islands BJP Vice President Sanjay Kumar Singh also praised the decision, commending the government’s efforts to honor India’s cultural heritage and freedom fighters.
