Policeman Killed in Bomb Attack on Foreign Envoys’ Convoy in Swat, Pakistan

A remote-controlled bomb targeted a police van guarding foreign diplomats in Swat, Pakistan, killing one policeman and injuring four others. The attack occurred as the convoy was traveling to Malam Jabba.

According to District Police Officer Zahidullah Khan, the deceased policeman was identified as Burhan, and the injured included a sub-inspector. The diplomats, from countries including Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Iran, Ethiopia, Portugal, and Russia, were unharmed and relocated to Islamabad.

Following the incident, a large number of police enforcement agencies were stationed in the area. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack, paid respects to the deceased officer, and wished a quick recovery for the injured. He also sent condolences to the bereaved family.

Pakistan has seen a rise in violent attacks since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Data from the Pak Institute for Peace Studies indicated an increase in attacks from 38 in July to 59 in August, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa witnessing 25 casualties in 29 attacks during August.
