In Nagaon, Assam, police have recovered the body of Tafazul Islam, the prime suspect in the alleged gang rape of a 14-year-old girl. Islam reportedly escaped from police custody and drowned in a pond.

Details of the Incident

According to Swapnaneel Deka, Superintendent of Police of Nagaon district, Islam was arrested on Friday in connection with the case. While being taken to the crime scene for investigation, he attempted to flee and jumped into a nearby pond. His body was recovered the following morning with the help of the SDRF team.

The incident occurred on August 22 when the minor girl was returning home from tuition classes. She was allegedly gang-raped by three individuals. Locals found her in a semi-conscious state by the roadside and admitted her to a hospital.

Public Reaction and Government Response

The incident has triggered massive protests in the Dhing area, with locals and various organizations demanding strict action against the culprits. Assam Director General of Police, GP Singh, visited the site and met with the victim’s family and senior police officials.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the need for prompt action against crimes against women. He stated, “When there is any atrocity against women, we need to take prompt action.” He also mentioned that the government should take aggressive action to prevent public anger.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the other two suspects involved in the case.
