Police Arrest Two Men for Extorting Money from Businessman in Guwahati

Police in Guwahati, Assam, have arrested two individuals, Raju Das and Paban Darjee, for extorting Rs 20,000 from a tiles businessman in Jalukbari. The Commissioner of Police, Diganta Barah, revealed that the accused sent a handwritten note to the businessman, identifying themselves as Anup Chetia, and demanded money over the phone, threatening dire consequences if the money was not paid.

The money was handed over to an associate of the caller in front of the Radisson Blu hotel on August 17, 2024. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the two accused were running an extortion racket, posing as members of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), and had extorted money from several commercial establishments in Guwahati.

Both Raju Das and Paban Darjee were arrested in a swift operation by a team from the West Guwahati Police and are currently in the custody of the Jalukbari police outpost.
