Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Singapore on September 4, marking his first visit in six years. This visit is significant for trade and investment, as Singapore is India’s largest trade partner in ASEAN and a leading source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

Importance of the Visit

Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary East in the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted the importance of the visit. He noted that Singapore is India’s sixth largest trade partner worldwide and a major source of FDI, with an accumulative FDI of USD 160 billion since 2000.

Engagement with Business Leaders

During the visit, PM Modi will address CEOs and discuss India’s growth story. This interaction with business leaders is a key element of the visit.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Mazumdar recalled the beginning of India-Singapore ties and emphasized the significance of this visit, especially with the recent appointment of Singapore’s new Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong. The visit aims to set the stage for the next phase of India-Singapore bilateral relations.

Areas of Cooperation

The visit will also focus on new areas of cooperation identified during the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable, including digitization, skill development, sustainability, health, advanced manufacturing, and connectivity. Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are likely to be exchanged in these areas.

Celebrating Milestones

The visit takes place as India and Singapore prepare to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025 and the 10th year of their strategic partnership.
