PM Narendra Modi to Attend 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Russia from October 22-23 at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The visit is for the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, chaired by Russia. The summit’s theme is “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security.”
During the summit, PM Modi will engage in bilateral meetings with leaders from BRICS member countries and other invited leaders. The summit will serve as a platform to discuss global issues and assess the progress of BRICS initiatives, as well as explore future collaboration opportunities.
The BRICS group, originally BRIC, was formed in 2006 and includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It represents 41% of the world population, 24% of global GDP, and over 16% of world trade.
President Putin extended the invitation to PM Modi in September, suggesting a bilateral meeting on October 22. Putin referred to Modi as a “good friend” during a meeting with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in St. Petersburg.
This will be PM Modi’s second visit to Russia in 2024, following his trip to Moscow in July for the India-Russia Annual Summit, where he received Russia’s highest civilian award, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle.
