PM Narendra Modi Attends BRICS Summit in Russia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a two-day visit to Russia to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan from October 22-24. The summit, chaired by Russia, focuses on the theme ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security.’

During his visit, PM Modi is expected to engage in bilateral meetings with leaders from BRICS member countries and other invited leaders. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the summit as a platform for discussing key global issues and assessing the progress of BRICS initiatives.

This marks PM Modi’s second visit to Russia in 2024, following his trip to Moscow in July for the India-Russia Annual Summit, where he met with President Putin and received Russia’s highest civilian award, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle.

Indian Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, emphasized India’s commitment to economic cooperation within BRICS, noting the agenda includes expanding economic cooperation, trade settlement in national currencies, sustainable development, and digital inclusion.

BRICS, originally formed by Russia, India, and China in 2006, expanded to include South Africa in 2010. In 2024, five new members joined: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

PM Modi’s engagements in Russia include participation in the BRICS summit and bilateral meetings, including one with President Putin. The two countries aim to achieve a trade target of USD 100 billion by 2030, with plans and activities underway to reach this goal.

The next India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission meeting is scheduled for November, where new targets in various sectors will be finalized.
