Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the ties between India and Brunei have been elevated to the level of Enhanced Partnership. During a banquet hosted by Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and hospitality.

PM Modi highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations, noting that this year marks the 40th anniversary of their political relations. He stated, “We are committed to strengthening our cooperation in the economic, scientific, and strategic areas.”

The leaders discussed long-term cooperation in LNG and agreed to enhance collaboration in the space sector. PM Modi also announced the start of direct flights between the two countries and emphasized mutual cooperation in agriculture, industry, pharma, health, technology, and cyber security.

PM Modi praised the Indian community’s positive contributions to Brunei’s economy and society. He also inaugurated the new Indian High Commission in Brunei, which integrates traditional Indian motifs and lush tree plantations.

PM Modi commended the Sultan’s leadership and vision for Brunei’s progress, especially the ‘Wawasan 2035’ initiative. He extended best wishes on behalf of 140 crore Indians for Brunei’s 40th Independence Day.

Calling Brunei an important partner in India’s Act East Policy, PM Modi emphasized the importance of ASEAN centrality and freedom of navigation under international laws. He also held wide-ranging talks with the Sultan to further cement bilateral ties.

PM Modi’s visit to Brunei included a ceremonial welcome and a visit to the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. He will next head to Singapore for a two-day visit.
