Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pedro Sanchez of Spain have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the India-EU Strategic Partnership. A significant focus is the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor Project (IMEEC). President Sanchez’s visit to India on October 28-29 marked the first by a Spanish President in 18 years. He was joined by key ministers and a business delegation.

The leaders discussed advancing the EU-India triple negotiations, which include a Free Trade Agreement, Investment Protection Agreement, and Geographical Indications Agreement. They emphasized the potential of the IMEEC to improve connectivity between India and Europe.

During the New Delhi G20 Summit in September 2023, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by India, the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy, and the European Union to establish the IMEEC. This corridor includes an Eastern Corridor linking India to the Gulf and a Northern Corridor connecting the Gulf to Europe.

PM Modi and President Sanchez also explored cooperation in trade, investment, technology, energy, logistics, ports, and infrastructure.
