Key Areas of Cooperation

The leaders released a document titled ‘India and Maldives: A Vision for Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership,’ focusing on defense, trade, and development projects. India will assist Maldives in housing, ports, airports, and more.

Development Projects

India will support the Greater Male Connectivity Project and explore connecting Thilafushi and Giraavaru islands. A commercial port at Thilafushi and transshipment facilities at Ihavandhippolhu and Gaadhoo islands are planned.

Economic and Trade Initiatives

The countries aim to establish an ‘Agriculture Economic Zone’ and enhance tourism and fish processing facilities. Discussions on a Bilateral Free Trade Agreement and local currency trade settlements are underway.

Efforts to boost tourism and promote bilateral investments will be strengthened, with a focus on agriculture, fisheries, and the blue economy.
