Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, September 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah on Wednesday. PM Modi emphasized that Brunei is a key partner in India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision. The meeting marked the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei.

PM Modi expressed his gratitude to the Sultan and the Royal Family for their warm welcome and hospitality. He conveyed greetings from 140 crore Indians on Brunei’s 40th anniversary of Independence. PM Modi highlighted the centuries-old cultural ties between the two nations, which form the basis of their friendship.

PM Modi recalled the Sultan’s visit to India as the Chief Guest on Republic Day in 2018. He expressed happiness about visiting Brunei at the start of his third term and called Brunei an important partner in India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision. He believes that this visit will provide strategic direction to their future relations.

The Ministry of External Affairs reported that PM Modi and Sultan Bolkiah had productive discussions and welcomed the elevation of bilateral ties to Enhanced Partnership. They reviewed relations in areas such as defense, trade, and people-to-people ties, and discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest.

PM Modi arrived in Brunei on Tuesday and was given a ceremonial welcome. He thanked Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah for the warm reception at the airport. This visit is historic as it is the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei.
