PM Modi Honors Jam Saheb of Nawanagar in Poland

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Jam Saheb of Nawanagar Memorial in Warsaw, Poland, on Wednesday. This memorial celebrates the shared history between India and Poland. PM Modi’s visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in 45 years.

The memorial is dedicated to Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji, a former Maharaja of Nawanagar (now Jamnagar). In 1942, the Maharaja established the Polish Children’s Camp in Jamnagar for refugee Polish children during World War II.

Upon his arrival in Poland, PM Modi was greeted by members of the Indian diaspora. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, mentioned that PM Modi will also pay tribute at Good Maharaja Square, Monte Cassino Memorial, and Memorial to Kolhapur Family. These memorials highlight the special historical connections between India and Poland.

During World War II, Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar saved the lives of several Jewish children by bringing them to India from Poland and taking care of them. Warsaw’s ‘Good Maharaja Square’ honors Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji for his efforts.

PM Modi is also set to visit the Monte Cassino Memorial, which commemorates the victory of the Second Polish Corps at the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944, where more than 900 Polish soldiers were killed.
