PM Modi Criticizes Congress on 50th Anniversary of Emergency

New Delhi [India], June 25: On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Congress Party for trampling on India’s Constitution. Modi paid homage to those who resisted the Emergency, stating, “The Dark Days of Emergency remind us of how the Congress Party subverted basic freedoms and trampled over the Constitution of India.”

He accused the then Congress government of disregarding democratic principles to cling to power, turning the nation into a jail and targeting the weakest sections. Modi added, “These are the same people who have imposed Article 356 on innumerable occasions, got a bill to destroy press freedom, destroyed federalism, and violated every aspect of the Constitution.”

Modi emphasized that the people of India have repeatedly rejected the Congress Party. BJP leaders, including JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh, and S Jaishankar, also shared their thoughts on social media. Rajnath Singh called the Emergency a “dark chapter” in India’s democracy, while S Jaishankar highlighted the courage of those who resisted it. JP Nadda reflected on the sacrifices made to protect democracy during the Emergency.
