New Delhi, India – Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Indian men’s and women’s chess teams at his residence after their historic double gold medal win at the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Chess Olympiad.
Historic Achievement
For the first time, both the Indian men’s and women’s teams secured gold medals in their respective categories at the Chess Olympiad. This remarkable achievement places India among the elite countries to have won double golds in the same edition of the competition.

Russian chess legend Garry Kasparov praised the Indian teams, referring to them as “Vishy’s children,” a nod to the influence of former world champion Viswanathan Anand. Kasparov highlighted the significance of India’s achievement in the global chess community.

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar also extended his congratulations to the teams for their double gold win. Viswanathan Anand, a global chess legend, specifically praised the performances of Vantika Agrawal and Divya Deshmukh in the final round.
Final Round Highlights
In the final round, the Indian men’s team, consisting of D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, and Pentala Harikrishna, defeated Slovenia 3.5-0.5. The women’s team, featuring Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, and Tania Sachdev, triumphed over Azerbaijan with the same score.

The USA secured the second spot in the men’s competition and a bronze in the women’s competition. Uzbekistan won the bronze in the men’s competition, while Kazakhstan took silver in the women’s competition.
