PM Modi Assures Help to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Amid Flood Crisis
New Delhi, India – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of full support from the central government to tackle the severe flooding in Assam. During a phone call, CM Himanta explained to PM Modi about the floods caused by heavy rains and the relief measures being taken.
CM Himanta shared on social media, ‘Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji called me a short while ago to enquire about the flood situation in Assam. I explained him that Assam is experiencing a second wave of floods this year due to heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh and part of our upper Assam districts. I also briefed him about the relief measures undertaken by the state government. He assured me of full cooperation from the Government of India in this hour of crisis.’
IMD Issues Red Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several northeastern states, including Assam, predicting extremely heavy rainfall over the next two days. Naresh Kumar, an IMD scientist, confirmed that the monsoon is currently in an active phase, with significant precipitation expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.
Impact on Kaziranga National Park
The floodwaters of the Brahmaputra River have entered Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, inundating 61 out of 233 camps. Sonali Ghosh, Field Director of Kaziranga National Park, reported that the floodwaters submerged 22 forest camps in the Agoratoli range, 10 in the Kaziranga range, 8 in the Bagori range, 5 in the Burapahar range, 6 in the Bokakhat range, and 10 in the Biswanath Wildlife Division. Measures have been taken to ensure the safety of wild animals, including the installation of speed sensor cameras on National Highway 37 and increased deployment of forest guards.
Flood Impact on Assam
The flood situation in Assam has worsened, with the death toll rising to 34, including two children in the Dhemaji district. The floods have affected over 2.62 lakh people in 12 districts, including Kamrup, Karimganj, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Majuli, Cachar, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Kokrajhar, and Jorhat.
