PM Modi Announces Five New Districts in Ladakh for Better Governance
New Delhi, India – On August 26, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the creation of five new districts in Ladakh, aiming to improve governance and bring prosperity to the region. The new districts are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.
PM Modi congratulated the people of Ladakh, stating that this move will bring services and opportunities closer to them. He shared this message in a post on X, replying to Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced this significant step as part of a broader effort to enhance development and governance throughout the Union Territory. Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized that this initiative aligns with PM Modi’s vision of a developed and prosperous Ladakh.
“In pursuit of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny.” – Home Minister Amit Shah
Former Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal also welcomed the decision, expressing gratitude to PM Modi for this visionary move. He believes it will strengthen governance and bring prosperity to every corner of Ladakh.
This decision comes almost five years after Ladakh was established as a union territory of India on October 31, 2019, following the passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act. Before that, it was part of the Jammu and Kashmir state.
