PM Modi Announces $1 Million Contribution to UNESCO for Heritage Conservation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India will contribute $1 million to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to support heritage conservation, especially in the Global South. Speaking at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi, Modi emphasized India’s commitment to preserving global heritage.
Modi highlighted India’s efforts in conserving sites like Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Cham Temples in Vietnam, and Bagan Stupa in Myanmar. He also announced a new certificate program in world heritage management for young professionals in India.
Modi urged everyone to come together to advance each other’s heritage and noted that India’s vision includes both development and heritage. He cited examples like the Vishwanath Corridor in Kashi and the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya as instances of India’s pride in its heritage.
Modi also pointed out that India’s heritage is not just history but also science, mentioning the engineering marvels like the Kedarnath Temple and the rust-resistant iron pillar in Delhi. He informed that the historic ‘Maidam’ in North East India has been proposed to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, which would be India’s 43rd World Heritage site and the first in North East India to receive this status.
