During the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the early discharge of Indian nationals in the Russian Army. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted that both leaders also talked about the Ukraine conflict, with PM Modi emphasizing dialogue and diplomacy. He shared India’s readiness to help bring peace to the region.

Misri mentioned that the Indian embassy is working on around 20 cases of Indian nationals in the Russian Army, hoping for their early release. The leaders expressed satisfaction with ongoing defense cooperation and planned a future meeting in Moscow. They also discussed energy cooperation, particularly the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, and economic collaboration, including supply chains for fertilizers and coal.

India will host the 25th session of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission in New Delhi in November 2024. Plans to open new consulates in Kazan and Yekaterinburg were also discussed. PM Modi praised the deep-rooted bond between India and Russia and thanked President Putin for the BRICS Summit invitation.

The leaders reviewed cooperation in various fields and agreed to strengthen their strategic partnership. They discussed progress since their last summit in July and exchanged views on BRICS matters. PM Modi was warmly welcomed in Kazan by the Indian community and local artists.
