PM Modi and PM Albanese Discuss Strengthening India-Australia Partnership at Quad Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese met on the sidelines of the 6th Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, US. This was their ninth in-person meeting since May 2022.

The leaders discussed enhancing cooperation in various areas including political and strategic matters, defense and security, trade and investments, education and research, climate change, and renewable energy. They also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Both leaders acknowledged the strong momentum in bilateral relations due to frequent high-level contacts. They renewed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in multilateral forums and taking the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to greater heights.

PM Modi posted on X, “Held extensive discussions with PM Albanese. We seek to add even more momentum in areas like trade, security, space, and culture. India greatly cherishes the time-tested friendship with Australia.” Albanese tweeted, “Great to talk with Prime Minister @narendramodi today at the Quad Leaders Summit about ways to strengthen our partnership.”

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted that the leaders discussed the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) and its impact on the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). They also talked about cooperation in defense, security, space, and critical minerals.

PM Modi also held bilateral meetings with Japanese PM Fumio Kishida and US President Joe Biden. Quad leaders appreciated PM Modi and India for their leadership role in the Indian Ocean.
