Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu have announced plans to enhance their developmental partnership. They aim to address the needs of the Maldives in areas such as ports, airports, housing, hospitals, roads, sports facilities, schools, and water systems.

Key Projects and Collaborations

The leaders agreed to support the Greater Male Connectivity Project and explore connecting Thilafushi and Giraavaru islands. They plan to develop a commercial port at Thilafushi to ease congestion at Male port and enhance cargo capacity.

Collaboration will also focus on trans-shipment facilities and bunkering services at Ihavandhippolhu and Gaadhoo islands. Efforts will be made to maximize the potential of Hanimaadhoo and Gan airports with Indian assistance.

Economic and Financial Support

India will assist the Maldives in addressing housing challenges and accelerate social housing projects. Financial support includes a USD 400 million and INR 30 billion currency swap agreement to help tackle financial challenges.

The leaders aim to transform their relationship into a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, focusing on trade, investment, and economic diversification.

Energy and Tourism Initiatives

Both countries will explore renewable energy projects to reduce energy costs and achieve sustainability goals. Efforts to boost tourism through marketing campaigns and collaborations are also planned.

Institutional and Trade Agreements

Discussions on a Free Trade Agreement and institutional cooperation between the parliaments of both countries will be initiated. The goal is to deepen trade linkages and reduce dependency on foreign currencies.
