The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) confirmed that no natural earthquake was recorded in Wayanad and its adjoining areas on August 9, 2024. The tremors reported were due to shifting rock masses from landslides, causing sub-terranean acoustic vibrations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan conducted an aerial survey of the landslide-affected areas in Wayanad. They visited the origin of the landslide at Iruvazhinji River and the worst-hit areas of Punchirimattam, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala.

Massive landslides hit Chooralmala and Mundakkai on July 30, causing widespread devastation. The district administration reported that 226 bodies and 403 body parts have been recovered from the disaster-hit areas.
