Vienna, Austria – Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Austria from July 9-10, where he held important discussions with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer. The two leaders emphasized the importance of a sustainable economic partnership and cooperation in renewable and green hydrogen.

Focus on Climate Change

Both countries are committed to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and aim to keep the global temperature rise well below two degrees Celsius. They discussed the Austrian government’s Hydrogen Strategy and India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, supporting partnerships between companies and research institutions in both countries.

Research and Innovation

PM Modi and Chancellor Nehammer highlighted the need for stronger collaboration in research, scientific tie-ups, and technology partnerships. They called for new business and industry models to develop and commercialize technologies in various sectors.

Economic Partnership

The leaders welcomed the first-ever high-level bilateral Business Forum in Vienna, which included CEOs from several companies. They encouraged business representatives to form dynamic partnerships across different sectors.

Start-Up Bridge

They also supported initiatives to connect the innovation and start-up ecosystems of both countries through the Start-Up Bridge, established during the Austrian Minister of Labour and Economy’s visit to India in February 2024. A group of Indian start-ups visited Austria in June 2024, further strengthening these ties.

Environmental Technologies

The leaders identified areas for cooperation in clean transportation, water and wastewater management, waste management, renewable energy, and other clean technologies. They encouraged public and private institutions to finance projects in these sectors.

Historic Visit

This visit marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Austria in 41 years, with Indira Gandhi being the last in 1983. PM Modi’s visit also coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Austria.
