53 Crore Accounts Opened, Says Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), a national mission for financial inclusion, has completed ten years. Since its launch on August 28, 2014, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 53.13 crore accounts have been opened with a total deposit balance of Rs 2.3 lakh crore.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman shared that the average balance per account has increased from Rs 1,065 in March 2015 to Rs 4,352 now, with around 80% of accounts being active. The scheme has been particularly successful in rural and semi-urban areas, where 66.6% of the accounts have been opened.

As of August 14, 2024, 55.6% of the total PMJDY accounts belong to women. Additionally, 99.95% of all inhabited villages now have access to banking facilities within a 5 km radius.

The government aims to open more than 3 crore PMJDY accounts during the current financial year. Under various social security schemes, over 20 crore people have enrolled in PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, and over 45 crore in PM Suraksha Bima Yojana. Under PM Mudra Yojana, 48.92 crore loans amounting to Rs 29.93 lakh crore have been sanctioned, and under the Stand-Up India Scheme, 2.36 lakh loans amounting to Rs 53,609 crore have been given to SC/ST and women entrepreneurs. PM SVANidhi has sanctioned loans worth Rs 12,630 crore to 65.27 lakh street vendors.
