Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, assured tobacco farmers and traders in Hyderabad that the Indian government will strive to waive penalties on excess tobacco production. He emphasized that PM Narendra Modi is committed to protecting farmers’ interests.

During the meeting, Goyal addressed several issues:

  • Staff shortages in the Tobacco Board will be resolved immediately.
  • The validity of registration for tobacco farmers will be extended from one year to three years, starting next season.
  • Farmers are encouraged to use the 3% interest subvention facility under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund for loans taken at a 9% interest rate.

Goyal also urged farmers to register online, although offline registration remains available for small farmers.
