Pilot Manish Shakya Survives Saurya Airlines Crash in Kathmandu
A Saurya Airlines plane crashed at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, Nepal, on July 24, 2024. The crash resulted in the deaths of 18 people, with the pilot, 37-year-old Manish Shakya, being the lone survivor. He was rescued and taken to KMC Hospital in Sinamangal.
The plane, a CRJ 200 with registration 9N-AME, took off from Kathmandu at 11:11 AM local time, heading to Pokhara for maintenance. It crashed shortly after takeoff on the east side of the runway. The aircraft was carrying only technical staff members of Saurya Airlines, with no passengers on board.
Following the crash, smoke was seen coming from the plane. Firefighters, Nepal Police, and the Nepali Army were deployed to the site to control the situation and conduct rescue operations. The Tribhuvan International Airport has been closed, affecting dozens of flights. Domestic flights have been stopped, and international flights have been put on hold or diverted to other airports. The airport will remain closed until the rescue operation is completed.
