The Philippine Coast Guard ship Teresa Magbanua has returned to port after five months of patrolling the disputed South China Sea. The ship, which faced challenges from Chinese vessels and harsh weather, is undergoing repairs and resupply.
Challenges Faced
During its deployment, the Teresa Magbanua was encircled by a larger flotilla of Chinese vessels and survived on limited provisions. On August 31, the ship was rammed by a China Coast Guard vessel, causing structural damage. Despite these challenges, the crew remained resilient.
Official Statements
Lucas Bersamin, executive secretary to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., stated that the ship’s repositioning allows for necessary repairs and medical attention for the crew. He emphasized that the ship will resume its mission once it is in top condition.
Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, Navy spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, assured that maritime patrols and air surveillance will continue in all Philippine-held features in the area.
Diplomatic Talks
On September 11, the Philippines and China held talks in Beijing regarding the contested Escoda Shoal. Both sides maintained their positions on jurisdiction, with the Philippines asserting its control over the shoal.
