PGIMER Contract Workers in Chandigarh Protest for Higher Wages

In Chandigarh, contract workers at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) have been protesting since October 10, demanding increased wages. The protest, led by the PGIMER Contract Workers’ Union President Rajesh Chauhan, follows a court order from November 2018 that favored the workers’ demand for higher wages. However, the PGIMER administration has not complied, leading to the ongoing strike.

Over 4,000 workers, including hospital attendants, sanitation workers, and security guards, are participating in the protest. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) represents these workers. The protest has resulted in a police FIR for unauthorized disruption of critical patient services, marking the second such incident in two months. The police stated that the protest violated a district magistrate’s order restricting unauthorized rallies and protests.
