Pashtana Durrani Speaks on Afghan Women’s Struggles Under Taliban Rule

As the Taliban strengthens its control over Afghanistan, women in the country face ongoing challenges. Afghan Human Rights activist Pashtana Durrani highlights that women continue to fight for their fundamental rights, including education and employment. Durrani, who founded LEARN Afghanistan, stresses the importance of resilience and self-reliance, as she believes international bodies will not bring change.

In an interview, Durrani expressed her disappointment with the upcoming UN-hosted Doha meeting, which excludes women and civil representatives. She criticized the UN and other organizations for their ineffective efforts and career-driven motives. The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women also expressed concern over the exclusion of women from the meeting.

Durrani pointed out that Afghan women are battling not only for their rights but also for their identity and the true representation of Islam. She noted that the Taliban’s core values remain unchanged, and Afghan women are leading the fight against these oppressive measures.

She also blamed Western bodies and Afghan politicians for enabling corruption and failing to protect the country’s interests. The US and NATO’s withdrawal in 2021 led to the Taliban’s swift takeover, further worsening the situation for Afghan women and minorities.
