Parthib Gogoi: The Rising Star of Indian Football Inspired by Sunil Chhetri and Lionel Messi

Parthib Gogoi, a 21-year-old footballer from Assam, is making waves in Indian football. Currently playing for NorthEast United FC (NEUFC), Parthib has set his sights on becoming the best footballer in India. Since joining NEUFC in June 2022, he has made 35 appearances and scored 8 goals.

Parthib’s journey began in Assam’s age-group teams and continued through Bengaluru’s Ozone Football Academy and Indian Arrows. He has also represented India in U20 and U23 national teams. In a recent interview, Parthib shared his ultimate goal: “In the next five years, I have to become the best player in India. That is the only goal.”

Parthib looks up to Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri and Argentine star Lionel Messi. “Sunil Chhetri, obviously, is my idol, and Messi as well. They inspire me because of their never-give-up attitude,” he said.

A few months ago, Parthib had the chance to speak with Sunil Chhetri, seeking advice on the mindset of a player and how to cope when things don’t go as planned. “He gave me a lot of advice, and it will help me evolve as a player,” Parthib reflected.

On August 4, 2023, Parthib scored his first senior hat-trick for NEUFC against Shillong Lajong in the Durand Cup, leading his team to a 4-0 victory. He is enjoying his time at NEUFC and credits the club’s CEO, Mandar Tamhane, for his growth. “I’m enjoying it here and learning so much,” he said.

Parthib remains focused on his goals but is realistic about his expectations. “I’m not thinking too much about scoring long-range goals, but I’d like to be in double digits in the goal-scoring tally,” he noted.

Despite facing challenges, Parthib maintains a positive outlook. “I don’t dwell too much on bad games. It’s okay if I have one bad game, the next one will be better,” he said.

Parthib has recently extended his contract with NEUFC and is happy to call it his home. He aims to win all upcoming tournaments, including the Durand Cup, Indian Super League (ISL), and the Super Cup.

Interestingly, Parthib draws inspiration from playing video games. “When I see free space on the field and can target it in the post, I shoot. I don’t overthink it, I just implement what I’ve practiced on the ground,” he shared.

As Parthib Gogoi continues to pursue his dream of becoming India’s best football player, he remains a player to watch in the ongoing Durand Cup and the upcoming Indian Super League.
