Pakistan’s Shehbaz Sharif Government Increases Electricity Prices

The government of Pakistan, led by Shehbaz Sharif, has increased the base tariff of electricity for domestic consumers to PKR 48.84, according to Geo News. This hike, approved by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), will not affect those using up to 200 units per month for three months.

NEPRA approved the government’s request for a hike of up to PKR 7.12 per unit for domestic consumers. The increase also applies to commercial, agricultural, and general services consumers. The federal cabinet approved increases of PKR 8.04 for commercial consumers, PKR 6.62 for agricultural consumers, PKR 6.96 for general services, and PKR 5.96 for bulk consumers.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a three-month subsidy for households using up to 200 units, which make up 94% of electricity consumers. This subsidy will be funded through the development budget.
