Pakistan’s Political Parties Discuss Judicial Reforms and Constitutional Amendments

In Islamabad, Pakistan’s major political parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), have agreed on judicial reforms through proposed constitutional amendments. However, the JUI-F, led by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has reservations about certain points.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif plan to meet with Maulana Fazlur Rehman to address these concerns. The JUI-F has proposed key amendments, including a change to Article 38 to make the state interest-free by 2028, which was not part of the draft approved by the parliamentary special committee. They also want all bills to be reviewed by the Council of Islamic Ideology before being passed by parliament.

Despite these disagreements, the government intends to present the constitutional amendments in parliament, even if Maulana Fazlur Rehman does not agree. The PML-N-led government plans to introduce these amendments later on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan stated that the party will follow Imran Khan’s directives on the amendments. After meeting with Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Barrister Gohar mentioned that they had a detailed discussion on the proposed changes.
