Pakistan’s Government Struggles to Convince JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Constitutional Amendments

Islamabad [Pakistan], September 15: Pakistan’s government, led by Shehbaz Sharif, has not yet convinced Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman regarding the constitutional amendments. The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have also contacted Rehman, with PTI planning a meeting.

Earlier, Shehbaz Sharif summoned a federal cabinet meeting to discuss a draft of a ‘constitutional package’. The cabinet had a one-point agenda to consider the contentious constitutional amendments. After the federal cabinet passes the amendment, it will be presented before the Senate and the National Assembly. The amendment seeks to fix the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s tenure for three years among other things.

The federal government claimed they secured the two-thirds majority required to make constitutional amendments. Senators and Members of the National Assembly have been asked to remain in Islamabad to devise a strategy for the amendments.

PTI leader Zartaj Gul alleged that party member Saadullah Baloch’s family members were kidnapped to pressure PTI’s parliamentarian to support the amendments. She also mentioned that Aurangzeb Khan Khichi has been missing for the last three days.
