Government’s Plan to Curb Smuggling
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), a key federal law enforcement agency in Pakistan, has proposed amendments to the laws governing petroleum products. The government is planning a crackdown on illegal petrol pumps and has prepared a comprehensive plan to curb smuggling activities.
Smuggling Routes and Impact
Smuggled Iranian oil is reportedly stored in underground facilities in cities like Gwadar, Panjgur, Mashkhail, and Quetta. From these locations, it is transported in vehicles with hidden compartments to other parts of the country. This illegal trade supports over 2 million people in Balochistan, an area with limited economic opportunities.
Proposed Measures
The government has suggested empowering district administrations to seal unauthorized petrol stations and confiscate their equipment. Other proposals include digitalizing petrol pumps, using sim-based technology for sales monitoring, and developing digital and GIS applications to trace illegal stations.
