Enforced Disappearances Raise Concerns

In Balochistan, Pakistan faces criticism for its harsh tactics as reports of enforced disappearances emerge. On October 3, the Baloch National Movement’s human rights wing, Paank, reported that Imran Baloch, a farmer and family breadwinner, was forcibly taken by security forces in Gwadar. Paank expressed deep concern for his safety, demanding his release and calling the act a “brutal assault on human rights.”

Additionally, two Baloch students, Shamraiz Baloch, a law student at Superior University, and Deedag Baloch, an economics student at Punjab University, were reportedly abducted by Pakistani forces in Lahore. Paank urged Pakistan to respect human rights and ensure their safe return.

Human Rights Violations in Balochistan

These incidents contribute to Pakistan’s growing record of human rights violations in Balochistan, where enforced disappearances are common. Thousands of activists, students, and political leaders have vanished, leaving families in distress until bodies are found. The military, paramilitary forces, and intelligence agencies, including the ISI and Frontier Corps, are accused of these abductions, acting without legal accountability.

Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest and resource-rich province, has long sought autonomy and control over its resources. However, the state views these demands as threats to national sovereignty, responding with force to suppress political dissent. Enforced disappearances are used to intimidate the Baloch people, silencing their fight for self-determination and justice.

Pakistan’s militarized approach in Balochistan highlights its failure to address grievances through dialogue and reform. Instead of seeking peaceful solutions, authorities rely on oppression, increasing tensions and drawing international criticism for human rights disregard.
