Pakistani Traders Announce Nationwide Strike on August 28 Against Tajir Dost Scheme
The trader’s community in Pakistan has announced a nationwide strike on August 28 to protest the Tajir Dost scheme introduced by the Federal Board of Revenue. The All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajiran, along with other trade associations, held a joint news conference to express their discontent.
The traders stated that the Tajir Dost scheme is ‘unacceptable’ and demanded its immediate removal. They also urged the government to reverse the decision to impose high tariffs on the export sector and to eliminate higher income tax brackets for business owners and salaried individuals.
Additionally, the merchants declared that they would not be paying their August electricity bills and called for the government to review its contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
The Tajir Dost scheme, which was initially limited to six major cities, has now been extended to 42 cities, including Abbottabad, Attock, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Chakwal, Dera Ismail Khan, Faisalabad, Ghotki, Gujarat, Gwadar, Hafizabad, Haripur, Hyderabad, Islamabad, Jhang, Jhelum, Karachi, Kasur, Khushab, Lahore, Larkana, Lasbela, Lodhran, Mandi Bahauddin, Mansehra, Mardan, Mirpurkhas, Multan, Nankana, Narowal, Peshawar, Quetta, Rahim Yar Khan, Rawalpindi, Sahiwal, Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Sukkur, and Toba Tek Singh.
