Pakistani National Asif Raza Merchant Charged in US Assassination Plot

The US Justice Department has charged Asif Raza Merchant, a 46-year-old Pakistani national, with planning political assassinations in the United States. Merchant allegedly had connections to the Iranian government and aimed to target US government officials, including former President Donald Trump.

Details of the Plot

According to court documents, Merchant arrived in the US from Pakistan in April 2024 after spending time in Iran. He contacted a person he believed could help with his plan, who then reported him to law enforcement. Merchant outlined his plot to this confidential source in early June, suggesting it would not be a one-time event.

Merchant’s plan included stealing documents, organizing protests, and ultimately assassinating a political figure or government official. He expressed concerns about security measures and discussed various scenarios for carrying out the assassination. In mid-June, he met with individuals he thought were hitmen but were actually undercover FBI agents. He arranged to pay $5,000 in cash as an advance for their services.

Law Enforcement Intervention

Merchant planned to leave the country on July 12, 2024, one day before the planned assassination attempt on Trump. However, law enforcement intervened and arrested him before he could depart. Merchant is currently in federal custody in New York.

Statements from Officials

Acting Assistant Director Christie Curtis of the FBI New York Field Office said, “Fortunately, the assassins Merchant allegedly tried to hire were undercover FBI Agents. This case underscores the dedication and formidable efforts of our agents, analysts, and prosecutors in New York, Houston, and Dallas.”

US Attorney Breon Peace for the Eastern District of New York added, “This prosecution demonstrates that this Office and the entire US Department of Justice will take swift and decisive action to protect our nation’s security, our government officials, and our citizens from foreign threats.”
