Pakistan Responds to Chinese Ambassador’s Security Concerns

In Islamabad, Pakistan’s Foreign Office expressed surprise at a statement made by the Chinese Ambassador, Jiang Zaidong, which they felt did not align with the usual diplomatic traditions between the two nations. During a press briefing, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Office, stated that the protocol for ambassadorial visits is being tightened to ensure comprehensive security for foreign guests.

Ambassador Jiang had earlier called for a crackdown on anti-China terrorist groups in Pakistan following two attacks on Chinese nationals within six months. These incidents occurred in March and October, just before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pakistan. At a seminar titled ‘China at 75’, Jiang emphasized the need for enhanced security measures, stating that the attacks were “unacceptable” and had resulted in casualties.

Jiang highlighted that security concerns are a major constraint to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and stressed the importance of a safe environment for its success. He urged Pakistan to severely punish those responsible for the attacks and to improve security for Chinese personnel and projects. The seminar was organized by the Pakistan China Institute and also featured Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.
