Pakistan’s Struggle with Law and Order
Pakistan has been ranked 140th out of 142 countries in the World Justice Project (WJP) Rule of Law Index, making it the third worst globally in terms of order and security. The WJP report evaluates countries on factors like government constraints, corruption absence, open government, fundamental rights, order and security, regulatory enforcement, civil justice, and criminal justice.
Decline in Law and Order
The report highlights a significant decline in Pakistan’s law and order, with crime control, protection from armed conflicts, and the use of violence to resolve disputes being key issues. This decline reflects a breakdown of trust in the government, which is responsible for maintaining national integrity.
Global Rankings
Pakistan ranks 103rd for government constraints, 120th for corruption, 106th for open government, 125th for fundamental rights, 127th for regulatory enforcement, 128th for civil justice, and 98th for criminal justice. Only Mali and Nigeria rank lower in law and security.
Global Context
WJP co-founder William H Neukom noted the global decline in rule of law over seven years but emphasized ongoing efforts to improve justice systems. Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Germany lead the rankings.
