Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto Meet to Resolve Coalition Disputes

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a meeting with leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to address growing disagreements within the ruling coalition. The meeting, scheduled for Thursday, aims to resolve issues related to the federal government’s downsizing of ministries and a power rate subsidy for Punjab province.

Key Attendees

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has received a formal invitation for the meeting, which will be followed by a dinner at the PM House. The PPP delegation is expected to include Sherry Rahman, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, and Syed Naveed Qamar, although this is not confirmed. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Advisor on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah, and other key cabinet members will support the prime minister.

Background

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has already arrived in Islamabad and chaired a meeting of the party’s central Punjab chapter at Zardari House. The discussions focused on the political situation and PPP’s organizational matters.

Disagreements

The tensions between the ruling ally and the PPP have escalated over issues like skyrocketing electricity prices and the downsizing of ministries. The situation worsened when PML-N President Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz announced a PKR 14 per unit relief for Punjabi users, which was criticized by the PTI-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and PPP-led Sindh governments.

PM Sharif defended the Punjab government, stating that the Centre had not provided any funds to the province. He also urged other provinces to reallocate their development funds to offer similar relief to electricity consumers.
