Pakistan Increases Security for Muharram: Army and Rangers Deployed in Sensitive Areas

Pakistan Increases Security for Muharram

As Muharram approaches, Pakistan has heightened security measures, deploying military and Rangers in sensitive areas, particularly in Punjab. Media reports indicate that 502 locations in Punjab have been marked as sensitive, prompting the deployment of army and Rangers personnel.

Security Measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has convened a meeting to ensure robust security for Muharram. The plan includes deploying 40,000 security personnel, including FC and Pakistan Army troops, to safeguard religious processions and gatherings.

Preparations in Karachi

In Karachi, Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi has organized supervisory committees in each district. These committees, led by Deputy Commissioners, include religious scholars, organizers, law enforcement personnel, Rangers, and civic officials. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance security and ensure efficient civic services during this sensitive period.

Historical Context

Muharram holds deep religious significance for Shia Muslims. However, Pakistan has faced recurring sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia communities, leading to targeted attacks during Muharram processions and gatherings. Notable incidents include a suicide bombing in Quetta in 2007, a bombing in Karachi in 2009, and an attack in Rawalpindi in 2012.

Extremist groups have exploited these events to sow fear and disorder. The Pakistani government has struggled to mitigate these threats, leading to deadly incidents targeting Shia events. Additionally, extremist factions use social media to propagate hate speech and provoke violence during sensitive religious periods like Muharram, necessitating stringent monitoring and control measures to uphold peace and stability.
