Pakistan Bar Council Criticizes Shehbaz Sharif’s Secret Constitutional Amendments

The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has expressed serious concerns about the secrecy surrounding the constitutional amendments proposed by the Shehbaz Sharif-led federal government. The PBC called this a ‘blatant violation of democratic values’ during an emergent meeting chaired by Vice-Chairperson Farooq H Naek.

The council criticized the frequent adjournments of parliamentary sessions, stating that such actions tarnish the reputation of the parliament and its members. The PBC reviewed the 26th Constitutional Amendments clause by clause and made certain changes, deferring further discussions to September 25.

Earlier, the Pakistan government decided to take bar associations into confidence over the amendments. Minister for Law and Justice, Azam Nazeer Tarar, will brief the bar associations to develop a consensus on the proposed changes. The ‘Constitutional Package’ had failed to reach the parliament on September 17, as the government deferred presenting the amendments until a consensus is achieved.
