Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir Speaks on Armed Forces’ Strength Amid Lt Gen Faiz Hameed’s Arrest
Islamabad [Pakistan], August 14: Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir has stressed that weakening the armed forces is equivalent to weakening the country. He made these remarks during the Azadi Parade at Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) in Kakul on the eve of the country’s Independence Day.
General Munir stated, “We emerge as a strong nation after trial and tribulations. To weaken Pakistan’s armed forces is tantamount to weakening the country itself.” He added that the armed forces have taken an oath to defend the country both internally and externally.
These comments come shortly after the arrest of former ISI chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed. The Pakistan Army announced Gen Hameed’s arrest on allegations of violating the Army Act, prompted by accusations of misconduct from the owner of a private housing society. Lt Gen Hameed is the third general officer to face court-martial proceedings, charged with misusing his position to extort money.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and senior PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah have commented on the situation. Asif mentioned that Gen Faiz has been involved in political events since his retirement, while Sanaullah alleged that some allegations against Hameed must have been proven, leading to his arrest. Hameed, known for his close ties to former Prime Minister Imran Khan, retired in November 2022 when Gen Asim Munir took over as Pakistan’s new army chief.
