Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 4: Pabitra Margherita, the Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, emphasized the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in promoting sustainable development and inclusive growth in the North East region. Speaking at the Valedictory Session of the CII North East CSR Conclave, he stated that CSR is not just a moral duty but a key driver of socio-economic progress.

The conclave, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on July 3-4, brought together businesses, government officials, civil society, and NGOs to discuss sustainable development in the North East. Margherita highlighted the significant role of CSR in supporting sustainable livelihoods, particularly in the handloom and textiles sector, which is vital to the North East’s economy.

He noted that around 27.83 lakh handloom households are involved in weaving, with 87% in rural areas and 13% in urban centers. The North East accounts for 65.2% of the country’s operational handlooms, with Assam having the highest number of handloom workers. By directing CSR funds to the handloom sector, the socio-economic conditions of many people can be improved, as the North East contributes to 50% of the workforce in the textile sector.

Margherita urged corporate India to develop long-term CSR strategies for the North East and provide short-term disaster relief and rehabilitation support. He encouraged companies to partner with local NGOs to create sustainable impacts and contribute to the region’s growth.

Pradeep Bagla, Chairman of the CII North East Council and Managing Director of Amrit Cements Limited, also spoke at the event. He emphasized CII’s commitment to the strategic development of the North East, linking each developmental project to national security. Bagla stated, “CII has consistently emphasized the strategic importance of the North Eastern Region, where each developmental project directly links to our national security.”

The CII North East CSR Conclave showcased impactful projects, facilitated knowledge sharing, and provided insights into emerging CSR trends. Seventeen NGOs presented their initiatives to attract corporate support, and over 100 NGOs connected with more than 80 corporates to explore potential partnerships.

During the inaugural session, Margherita released a compendium highlighting successful CSR initiatives in the region. An exhibition showcased various social development projects, offering a glimpse into the region’s development journey and the transformative impact of collaborative efforts.
