P. Chidambaram Talks About Elections, CAA, and Rahul Gandhi’s Visit to Manipur
Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP P. Chidambaram emphasized the importance of opposition parties being prepared for elections in a parliamentary democracy. He made this statement following RJD Chief Lalu Yadav’s remarks about the potential fall of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government by August.
Chidambaram stated, “An opposition party always has to be ready for elections in a parliamentary democracy. This is not a fixed term like that of the President of the US. Every day, you have to be accountable to Parliament, and you can be defeated at any time.” When asked about the government’s longevity, he suggested asking Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar, whose parties are key players in the NDA bloc.
Chidambaram also discussed the Congress party’s opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which aims to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. He noted that the Congress and the INDIA bloc are against the CAA.
He highlighted Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to Manipur, where he met with affected people and raised their concerns. Chidambaram criticized Prime Minister Modi for being busy with foreign visits and not addressing the violence in Manipur, which has been ongoing since May 3 last year.
