Security Meeting Without Chief Minister Omar Abdullah

Former Union Minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram has expressed his disapproval of Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for conducting a security review meeting without the presence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Chidambaram highlighted this issue in a post, questioning the absence of the elected chief minister in such an important meeting.

Chidambaram described Jammu and Kashmir as “half a state,” emphasizing that while the people have elected a chief minister, the authority over police and public order remains with the LG. He stressed the need for the immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Background of the Meeting

On October 16, Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The security review meeting, led by LG Sinha, took place in Srinagar at Raj Bhavan. The meeting aimed to address the security situation in the Kashmir Division, especially after a recent terror attack in Gagangir, Ganderbal district, which resulted in the loss of seven lives.

During the meeting, LG Sinha instructed the police to enhance security around key infrastructure projects and construction camps. He emphasized the importance of a strong security and intelligence network and coordinated operations with the army and other security agencies to combat terrorism. The meeting was attended by senior police officers, the J-K Principal Secretary of the Home Department, and other civil administration officials.
