Owaisi, Sibal, and Karat Criticize UP Government’s ID Card Rule for Kanwar Yatra Shops
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], July 20: The Uttar Pradesh government’s directive for food shops on the Kanwar Yatra route to display ID cards has sparked controversy. AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the move, stating it reflects hatred towards Muslims in India. He blamed political parties and leaders of Hindutva as well as so-called secular parties for this hatred.
Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal questioned whether this directive aligns with the vision of a developed India, suggesting it promotes division. CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat compared the move to actions taken in Nazi Germany, condemning it as unconstitutional and divisive. She urged the courts to take action against the order.
In contrast, BJP leader Mohsin Raza supported the directive, emphasizing the importance of security and harmony during the Kanwar Yatra. BJP National General Secretary Dushyant Kumar Gautam dismissed concerns, stating that local Muslims have no issue with the order and welcome the Kanwar yatris.
On Friday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mandated that food and beverage shops along Kanwar routes display the name and identity of the operator/owner to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrims’ faith. Action will also be taken against those selling halal-certified products. This directive has led to a political clash between the BJP and the opposition.
