Onion Express from Nashik Brings Relief to Delhi
A special train called the Onion Express has arrived in Delhi, bringing 1,341 tonnes of onions from Nashik. This initiative aims to control the rising onion prices in the national capital region. Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, explained that transporting onions directly from farms to the railway network reduces time and costs, benefiting farmers and consumers alike.
Onion prices have been increasing in many cities, causing concern among consumers. Another Onion Express with a similar load is expected to arrive in Delhi soon. Previously, these trains have also delivered onions to Guwahati and Chennai to help meet consumer demand.
India recently lifted the minimum export price on onions, which was initially imposed in September. This decision comes ahead of the Assembly polls in Maharashtra, the largest onion-producing state. The government maintains a buffer stock to stabilize prices during low supply periods.
