Omar Ayub Khan Steps Down as PTI Secretary-General

Islamabad, Pakistan – In a significant move, Omar Ayub Khan, a top leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has resigned from his position as the party’s secretary-general. He announced that he is stepping down to concentrate on his duties as the Leader of the Opposition in Pakistan’s National Assembly.

Omar Ayub expressed his gratitude to former Prime Minister Imran Khan for accepting his resignation. He shared this news on his official X handle, stating that he had submitted his resignation on June 22, 2024, to both Imran Khan and PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan. The message was conveyed to Imran Khan by Senator Shibli Faraz during a meeting in Adyala Jail.

Ayub also mentioned that further changes in the PTI’s organizational structure are expected soon, as directed by the party founder. He thanked all PTI members, parliamentarians, and office holders for their hard work and dedication.

This development comes amid reports of internal conflicts within PTI. Geo News reported that 27 lawmakers from the PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) were considering resigning from the National Assembly in protest against the party’s leadership. They were dissatisfied with the leadership’s efforts to secure the release of Imran Khan from jail.

Omar Ayub was appointed as the PTI secretary-general last year after Asad Umar resigned from the position and left active politics. His resignation coincided with a court decision rejecting pleas for the release of Imran Khan and his wife. Imran Khan, who was ousted from power in April 2022, has been facing multiple charges and has been in jail since August last year.
