Omar Abdullah to Become First Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory

On October 16, in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister-designate, paid respects at the grave of his grandfather, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, known as “Sher-e-Kashmir.” Sheikh Abdullah was the first Prime Minister and later Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after its accession to India. Omar’s father, Farooq Abdullah, has also served as Chief Minister three times.

Omar Abdullah expressed his commitment to addressing the needs of the people, stating, “We have a lot to do. We have to give people the hope that this is their government and they will be heard.” He also mentioned his unique position as the last Chief Minister to serve a full six-year term and now the first for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. He hopes the Union Territory status is temporary and aims to restore statehood.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre, with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha administering the oath. This marks the first elected government since the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of the state into Union Territories.

Omar Abdullah, a former Member of Parliament and Union Minister, will lead the new government after the recent Assembly polls. The President’s rule, in place since 2018, was recently revoked. Leaders from the INDIA Bloc, including Akhilesh Yadav, Prakash Karat, Supriya Sule, and Kanimozhi, are attending the ceremony.
